Mentorship Overview
This 8-week coaching program is Step Two in our three-part career pathway for Workers’ Compensation Nurse Case Management. It’s designed to deepen your skills, reinforce your knowledge, and prepare you for hands-on application in the internship phase.
Through structured, one-on-one coaching with an experienced Workers’ Compensation expert, you’ll learn how to manage cases from start to finish, master documentation and treatment planning, and develop conflict resolution strategies that balance patient advocacy with organizational requirements.
Program Details
- Duration: 8 weeks
- Session Length: 1 hour/week
- Goal: Equip nurses with the confidence, competence, and case management skills to excel in Workers’ Compensation.
Program Outline
Week 1: Introduction to Workers’ Compensation and Case Management
Understand the foundational principles of Workers’ Compensation and the role of the Nurse Case Manager.
Week 2: Case Management Process & Communication Skills
Learn how to guide cases from start to finish and develop professional communication strategies.
Week 3: Medical Terminology & Documentation
Build fluency in key medical terms and master documentation best practices.
Week 4: Managing Medical Treatment & Return-to-Work Plans
Understand treatment coordination and how to facilitate safe, timely return-to-work outcomes.
Week 5: Managing Complex or Difficult Cases
Learn strategies for navigating high-risk or complicated medical cases.
Week 6: Handling Disputes & Conflicts
Develop conflict resolution skills for working with employees, employers, and providers.
Week 7: Building Resilience & Emotional Intelligence
Strengthen your emotional resilience and develop emotional intelligence for success in high-pressure situations.
Week 8: Review & Reflection
Evaluate your progress, review key lessons, and identify next steps.
About the Instructor:
Lori Schellenberg RN CCM comes from over 20 years as a Certified Case Manager, in Worker’s Compensation. She learned about Worker’s Compensation first from the Employers side, as an Occupational Health Nurse, developing an Occupational Program for a very large manufacturing facility. There she learned about safety, return to work, and the insurance process. This led her to transition to Worker’s Compensation Case Management. In that role she worked for several case management companies, managing cases, developing programs and marketing those programs. She set case management standards and helped launch quality initiatives. She developed orientation and training programs for new case managers and mentored them. Lastly, she worked on the provider side, developing and implementing a Worker’s Compensation Program for an Orthopedic Surgeon.
