Program Overview:
*This is the second, of a three-part series of courses for Workers’ Compensation Case Management, to provide the nurse with continued skill building experiences, to make a seamless transition.
• Duration: 8 weeks
• Session Length: 1 hour per week
• Objective: To provide nurses with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to effectively manage workers’ compensation cases, while ensuring they understand the balance between patient advocacy and organizational requirements.
Outline of Program
Week 1: Introduction to Worker’s Compensation and Case Management
Objective: Understand the foundational principles of worker’s compensation and the case manager’s role
Week 2: Case Management Process and Communication Skills
• Objective: Learn how to manage the case process from start to finish and develop effective communication skills.
Week 3: Understanding Medical Terminology and Documentation
• Objective: Familiarize with medical terms relevant to workers’ compensation cases and learn documentation best practices.
Week 4: Managing Medical Treatment and Return to Work
• Objective: Understand the processes involved in managing medical treatment and facilitating return-to-work plans.
Week 5: Managing Complex or Difficult Cases
• Objective: Learn how to manage cases that are more challenging, such as high-risk or complex medical conditions.
Week 6: Handling Disputes and Conflicts
• Objective: Build skills for resolving conflicts between the worker, employer, and medical providers.
Week 7: Building Resilience and Emotional Intelligence in Case Management
• Objective: Develop emotional resilience and enhance emotional intelligence to handle the emotional and psychological challenges that come with managing workers’ compensation cases.
Week 8: Review and Reflection
• Objective: Reflect on the program’s key learnings, challenges faced, and areas for improvement.
About the Instructor:
Lori Schellenberg RN CCM comes from over 20 years as a Certified Case Manager, in Worker’s Compensation. She learned about Worker’s Compensation first from the Employers side, as an Occupational Health Nurse, developing an Occupational Program for a very large manufacturing facility. There she learned about safety, return to work, and the insurance process. This led her to transition to Worker’s Compensation Case Management. In that role she worked for several case management companies, managing cases, developing programs and marketing those programs. She set case management standards and helped launch quality initiatives. She developed orientation and training programs for new case managers and mentored them. Lastly, she worked on the provider side, developing and implementing a Worker’s Compensation Program for an Orthopedic Surgeon.
